Vaux-le-Vicomte Castle played a special role in the political history of the French Monarchy. In the mid-17th century, Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV’s superintendent of finances, asked the best artists of the time to build his castle in Vaux-Le-Vicomte: Le Vau, Le Brun, Le Nôtre, Villedo.
When he invited Louis XIV to his castle, the king was furious to see such a magnificence which was not his. He suspected Nicolas Fouquet of stealing tax money and threw him in jail. Louis XIV then hired the same artists to build Versailles Castle, strongly inspired by the Vaux-le-Vicomte one.
This visit is linked to the conference subject as it shows the importance of luxury’s visibility in power relationships.
