What was the visual? It's not a representation of the world. So let's think about how to represent the world differently.

My work resolves both theoretically and empirically around the problem of how to represent the world, or rather: how to translate it. I draw a lot on actor network theory and the work of natural scientists to think about how sociologists can translate the world into a variety of media. Recent projects have dealt with trying to create new disaster scenarios with members of the public in a sandbox and also how to represent the smell of a city.

My work is not confined to "visual" sociology but by a belief that sociologists should work with any media that suits their research problem, rather than starting from a particular set of media to tackle whatever research question they encounter.
