AGAINST RACISM COVER IMAGES: Yaqoub Bou Aynaya
Beyond symbolic: no left turn, no entry
It was taken at a Black Lives Matter protest outside the United States embassy in Ballsbridge, Dublin, Ireland on 6th June 2020.
I chose this image as it symbolises the potential for a new movement that prioritises Black Lives Matter. This is achieved together with the more localised national call, in the Irish context, for an end to Direct Provision (a controversial state provision for the ‘accommodation’ of asylum seekers).
It also visualises global solidarities, a potential shift towards a greening urban environment, an alternative reclaiming of the streets, the centrality of female agency and so forth. Like seemingly ingrained concepts, the paint can be removed, directions can change, new forms of entries can happen and outwardly radical change can occur that is positive and progressive.
