Visual Communication of Cairo’s street billboards
Mennatullah’s study on ‘Visual Communication of Cairo’s street billboards’ contributes to actor-network theory, the field of urban planning practice, and the theory and practice of visual methodologies. Her project also develops participatory approaches and visual representation and analysis, and enhances our understanding of Egyptian culture and social life as well as the application of visual imagery to critical inquiry.
The committee thought that Mennatullah’s work clearly shows the gap between urban vision and urban challenges. She gives us a deep critical analysis of how the liberal capitalist international system leans on visions, images and communication tools to assert its power through architecture plans which leave aside a large part of the population, one that is ordinarily voiceless and « invisible ».
