IVSA Exhibitions

Where Visual Sociology Meets Creative Practice

Ever since the 1980s, the International Visual Sociology Association has sporadically included research-creation exhibitions as part of its conference program. IVSA conferences have thus always sought to include creative work, often in the form of photography exhibitions––photography historically being a core medium in the development of visual sociology. This need for engaging with creative works by IVSA members illustrate the porosity between art and research at the core of the development of visual sociology, both as an institutionalized field and as a community of scholars. However, the increasingly diverse range of media and practices being exhibited over the years, beyond photography, reflects how the discipline also expanded interdisciplinary conversations and progressively leaned towards experimental practice.

In 2022, the IVSA exhibition strategy started to become more closely related to the activities of the association’s flagship journal, Visual Studies. In recent years, Visual Studies has increasingly expanded its approach to visuals and aesthetics while continuously reflecting on its practices and engagement. This evolution is the result of a fast-growing collective commitment toward inclusivity, reflexivity, and experimentation within the journal’s editorial team and across the IVSA. As the IVSA conference expands towards less writing-centered media of dissemination, including through a dedicated Visualistas film festival in 2025, we continue to support the broader recognition of art-based, if not radically experimental, forms of research.

2026 IVSA Exhibition

May 11, 2026

While the IVSA celebrates its 40th anniversary, this theme calls for artworks that reflect on the heritage of visual practice within the social sciences; engage with the ways of knowing this heritage has marginalized beyond “the visual”; and/or propose subversive approaches to research-creation beyond existing disciplinary canons.

Since 2022, the collaboration between the IVSA conference and Visual Studies unfolded in the following ways :

  • Enrich the conference program through increasingly artistic, less academic, formats.
  • Facilitate dialogue among practitioners and scholars at the intersection of multiple approaches, disciplines, and fields of practice.
  • Invite a collective, critical reflection on what being visually engaged could mean outside the economy of scholarly knowledge and practices.
  • Further developing a space where IVSA members, visual social scientists, artists, and practitioners can experiment with visuals, visuality, and visualization (including beyond “the visual” per se through sounds and other media), by exploring boundaries between (their) scholarship and (their) art.
  • Promote experimental and art-based work created by the IVSA community via Visual Studies journal, including through the journal’s most visually-oriented features (e.g., “galleries”, New Media Reviews, cover images).

In the future, similar collaboration should be further developed with other journals, both within the IVSA (e.g., Journal of Video Ethnography) and beyond (e.g., art journals from hosting countries).

Previous IVSA Exhibitions

June 25–28, 2025

Between June 25–28, 2025, the International Visual Sociology Association’s community convened in Suwon, South Korea, for its annual conference to explore the theme “Beyond the Image: Addressing Power Dynamics in Visual Scholarship.” As one component of the conference, IVSA and its affiliate journal, Visual Studies, collaborated to organize an annual exhibition to facilitate dialogue among practitioners and scholars at the intersection of multiple approaches and rationalities.
