Remembering Howard Becker

Written on . Posted in .

For a great many of us in the IVSA, Howard (Howie) Becker modelled what it was to be an engaged social researcher and intellectual who continued to inspire us with each of his insightful books. We would like to remember Howie not only for ourselves, but also for the coming generations of researchers who may not have known him, although they may be influenced by his work in ways they may not fully appreciate.

We are planning a special session and remembrance for Howie at the next IVSA meeting in June 2024 in Veracruz, Mexico. We would also like to remember him in the first issue of Visual Studies for 2024.

As part of this initiative, we are calling for brief (150-300 word) personal testimonies on what Howie meant and did for our members, with a particular focus on his role as a mentor, colleague, and teacher. Please write your account as vividly as possible, and in the style with which you feel most comfortable. Here is the form for submitting your testimony. Deadline December 22, 2023.
